Join a community of makers as excited about clay as you are.
What is MCS?
Milkweed Clay Studio provides 24/7 access to a small group of members who are passionate about working with clay. The studio is a light-filled space in the historic Silk Mill building near downtown Charlottesville, VA. Our well-equipped studio provides wheels, large work tables, a slab roller, and three electric kilns to support our members on their creative journey.
Just as important as providing the physical space, MCS also provides a supportive and collaborative community that allows our members to learn and grow alongside one another. The communal workspaces invite members to share ideas, inspire one another, and support each other through the unavoidable frustrations that come from working with clay. We enjoy each other almost as much as we enjoy playing in the mud!
On occasion, we invite the public to come to the studio for workshops, special events, shows, and sales. These are opportunities for others to learn a new skill or find a new appreciation for ceramic arts, as well as see what makes Milkweed so special. If you haven’t visited yet, please join our mailing list to be notified when these events happen.
Why Milkweed?
The milkweed plant, despite its humble label as a weed, is a gorgeous flowering perrenial that thrives in Virginia’s clay-rich soil. It is known to be a haven for pollinators and is a host to caterpillars looking for nourishment before they transform into butterflies. Our hunger for being in a community of other creative artists is not unlike those caterpillars! Milkweed Clay Studio is intended to be a place of community and nourishment for all levels and types of ceramic artists.
